Bestie… Utah Completely Stole Our Hearts
Can I just tell you something?
I knew Utah would be beautiful.
I'd seen the Instagram photos.
I'd watched the TikToks.
I'd heard people rave about the red rocks, the hiking, and the national parks.
But absolutely nothing prepared me for seeing it in person.
The second we started driving through southern Utah, it honestly felt like we'd landed on another planet. Giant red cliffs stretched for miles, winding roads led us through breathtaking canyons, and every single turn looked like a postcard.
And then there were the kids.
If you've ever traveled with little ones, you know vacations don't always go according to plan. Sometimes there are meltdowns. Sometimes everyone is hungry. Sometimes someone suddenly has to use the bathroom when you're ten minutes into a hike.
But somehow...
Utah slowed us down in the best possible way.
Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, we spent our days exploring together, climbing rocks, taking snack breaks, laughing, and making memories I know my girls will remember for years.
Looking back at this photo of the three of them standing proudly with their hiking poles and oversized sun hats makes my mama heart so happy.
This wasn't just another vacation.
It became one of our favorite family adventures.
Why Utah Is Perfect for Families
Before this trip, I wasn't sure how kid-friendly hiking in Utah would actually be.
Would the trails be too difficult?
Would the girls get bored?
Would everyone end up cranky halfway through?
The answer surprised me.
Utah is packed with family-friendly hiking options, and many trails are short enough for younger kids while still delivering incredible scenery. Planning ahead with plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and choosing age-appropriate trails can make the experience enjoyable for everyone. (Visit Utah)
Our girls loved every second of it.
Honestly...
I think they loved climbing the rocks even more than reaching the viewpoints.
The Hiking Crew Was Ready
If this picture doesn't scream "family adventure," I don't know what does.
Three little girls.
Matching smiles.
Sun hats.
Hiking poles.
Flip-flops (which, okay...next time we'll definitely wear hiking shoes 😂).
Watching them get excited about exploring reminded me that kids don't need expensive entertainment.
They just need somewhere to run, climb, imagine, and discover.
Utah gave them all of that.
The Best Part Was Slowing Down
Life gets busy.
School schedules.
Sports.
Work.
Appointments.
Laundry.
Dinner.
Sometimes it feels like we're constantly racing from one thing to the next.
This trip forced us to slow down.
We weren't worried about checking emails.
We weren't staring at screens.
We were simply together.
Talking.
Laughing.
Exploring.
Sometimes the best memories happen when nothing exciting is actually happening.
Just being outside together felt like exactly what our family needed.
Hiking with Kids Isn't Always Perfect (And That's Okay)
Can I be honest?
Family hiking isn't always this picture-perfect.
There were moments when someone got tired.
Someone wanted another snack.
Someone wanted to stop every five feet to collect rocks.
Someone asked...
"Are we almost there?"
About fifty times.
😂
But that's honestly part of the adventure.
One of the best tips I learned is to stop worrying so much about reaching the destination.
For kids, the trail itself becomes the adventure.
Looking for lizards.
Finding funny-shaped rocks.
Watching birds.
Climbing logs.
Those little moments become their favorite memories. (Visit Utah)
My Biggest Mom Tip
Pack more snacks than you think you'll need.
Then pack more.
Seriously.
Nothing motivates little hikers quite like gummy bears and granola bars.
We also made lots of little water breaks.
Instead of saying,
"Come on...keep walking."
We'd say,
"Let's make it to that big rock!"
Or...
"Snack break at the next tree!"
It turned hiking into a game instead of a chore.
What We Packed
Here's what actually came in handy.
Water bottles
Trail mix
Granola bars
Fresh fruit
Sunscreen
Hats
Sunglasses
Extra clothes
Baby wipes
First aid kit
Lip balm
Portable phone charger
Trust me...
Baby wipes solve almost every travel problem.
Why Hiking Is Such a Great Family Activity
One thing I realized on this trip is how different hiking is from most vacations.
Nobody was staring at a tablet.
Nobody cared about Wi-Fi.
Nobody asked to watch TV.
Instead...
They were completely engaged.
They were asking questions.
Looking at bugs.
Watching birds.
Trying to climb every rock they saw.
Family hikes encourage kids to explore, build confidence, and spend meaningful time together away from screens. (Utah State University Extension)
Honestly...
That's priceless.
What I'd Do Differently Next Time
Every trip teaches you something.
Here's what I'd change.
✔ Wear hiking shoes instead of flip-flops.
✔ Start earlier before it gets hot.
✔ Freeze water bottles overnight.
✔ Bring cooling towels.
✔ Pack even more snacks.
✔ Download offline maps.
✔ Stay an extra day.
Because honestly...
One trip wasn't enough.
Family Travel Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Social media sometimes makes vacations look flawless.
Everyone smiles.
Nobody cries.
Nobody spills juice.
Nobody gets tired.
Real life?
Not so much.
Real family vacations are messy.
Kids argue.
Someone forgets sunscreen.
Somebody loses a hat.
You stop for bathroom breaks every thirty minutes.
But those imperfect moments usually become the funniest stories later.
And honestly...
I wouldn't trade them for anything.
Why Utah Should Be on Your Family Bucket List
If you're looking for a family vacation that's equal parts adventure and breathtaking scenery, Utah deserves a spot on your list.
There are so many incredible places to explore, from easy walks with scenic overlooks to iconic parks filled with towering red rock formations. Families often enjoy kid-friendly trails like the Riverside Walk in Zion, Canyon Overlook, and other shorter hikes that combine big views with manageable distances. (Visit Utah)
Whether your kids are experienced hikers or just starting out, there are trails that fit a variety of ages and abilities.
My Favorite Memory
This picture.
Right here.
Three little girls standing proudly with their hiking poles.
Smiling from ear to ear.
Completely unaware that they're creating memories they'll probably talk about years from now.
As parents, we spend so much time planning vacations.
Booking hotels.
Packing suitcases.
Making itineraries.
But the things our kids usually remember aren't the expensive attractions.
They remember laughing together.
Holding hands.
Eating snacks on giant rocks.
Finding cool sticks.
Watching the sunset.
Those are the moments that stay forever.
Travel Favorites I Never Leave Home Without

Reusable water bottles

Final Thoughts
Bestie, if you've been thinking about taking a family hiking trip, let this be your sign.
Don't wait until the kids are older.
Don't wait until life feels less busy.
Don't wait until everything is "perfect."
Go make the memories.
Take the pictures.
Pack the snacks.
Climb the rocks.
Watch the sunset.
Laugh when someone complains about walking another five minutes.
Because one day, these little adventures become the stories your family tells over and over again.
Utah gave us so much more than beautiful views—it gave us uninterrupted time together, fresh air, belly laughs, and memories we'll treasure forever.
And honestly?
That's the best souvenir we could have brought home. ❤️
